How to clean your shower curtain

While shower curtains are not that expensive, I cannot bare the thought of throwing out my shower curtain simply because it is dirty. We do not throw out dirty clothes, we simply wash them!

Washing your shower curtain is easier than doing a load of laundry – I’m serious.

When it comes time to wash my shower curtain I follow the below steps and get a sparkling clean shower curtain each time!

Perhaps the best thing about washing your shower curtain is that you likely have everything you need to wash it already in your home. All you need is Apple Cider Vinegar and some laundry detergent, and that is it!

3 minutes in microwave – Remember you just want to heat it up, not bring it to a boil

First thing that I do is pour about 5 cups of apple cider vinegar into a glass measuring cup and heat it in the microwave for about 3 minutes, you want to heat it up not bring it to a boil.

Next, you will want to throw your shower curtain into the washer machine. I usually throw in a dirty rag to add some texture to the wash. I also use an eco egg instead of detergent, so that adds some texture as well. I am not really sure if it helps but in my head the added texture rubs off the grim – I could be crazy lol.

You can get this ECO-Egg from Amazon – it last for 700 washes!

I set my washer to wash with cold water and on the delicates cycle – I am too afraid to set it to anything higher than that in fear that it will ruin my curtain. Do not feel bad if you have to wash your curtain a 2nd or 3rd time – it will really all depend on how long it has been since you last washed it as to how many washes you will need. You might also need too scrub a little towards the bottom to help the process along.

Update: So this time I sprayed some of my all purpose cleaner all over the shower curtain before the second wash, and whoa, it did some serious damage to the grim on my curtain.

Good as new shower curtain!

And lastly, once your shower curtain is done in the wash, just hang it back up and viola – you have a good as new shower curtain!

I hope that you find this helpful and if you try it – let me know how it works!

I have since switched to a mildew resistant compostable shower curtain and I am obsessed! I have been using it for about a week and half now and it still looks brand new! Get yours here!
